Karen Schreiner Bio
Karen’s work is all about the image. The image as stimulus and the image as perception. She is concerned with exploring the tenuous and arbitrary link between stimulus and perception; sign and signified, form and meaning. For this reason, she concentrates on the elements of visual communication and their composition into structures of meaning.
Karen’s pictures begin as sketches, doodles, photographs, or a combination of these. She works predominantly with Paint Shop Pro, ArtRage and PhotoImpact software. Most times, she will allow the image to dictate where it wants to go, experimenting with the elements until some meanings emerge for her. From that point on she will work towards fulfillment of those meanings. Very occasionally, she will set out from the onset with some end-result in mind, but this is rare. From the point of view of the observer, Karen tries to avoid imposing one absolute meaning on the work. The greater the possibilities for other meanings, the better. Her biggest hope is that people will look at her work and get something different out of it on each viewing.
In real life, Karen holds University degrees in Applied Science and Arts. She has lectured in computing and design. She is a member of the Australian National Association for the Visual Arts, as well as the Australian Computer Society. Her work is exhibited on several online artists websites, including the Saatchi Gallery of Contemporary Art in London. Karen is in the process of setting up her full-time career as an artist in Real Life, as well as in Second Life.
Karen will be displaying her art during the in-world portion of the SLCC.
